I explain that worship leaders have a responsibility to help guide people in worship without distractions, which requires dedicating time during the week to practice individually before rehearsals. I compare this to how other church ministries prepare, and emphasize that this is about stewardship and serving God and people, not about being professional musicians. I also address how proper preparation builds resilience when technical issues arise during services, and why we can’t claim to want excellence while accepting mediocrity. Finally, I encourage team members to find a schedule that works for them rather than overcommitting, and to view practicing as a privilege and honor.

Subscribe now

In 2 Chronicles chapter 29, King Hezekiah calls the priests and Levites to consecrate themselves before they ministered to the Lord. They did not just show up casually and “wing it.” They prepared their hearts, their hands, the instruments, and the temple itself before worship could happen. The preparation was part of the worship.

Practice at home and rehearsal with your team are both essential because each one builds something different inside of you as a worship leader.

The joy of worship you experience on Sunday is often built quietly through the unseen tears of preparation long before anyone walks into the room.

Most people celebrate the moment of worship, but few see the sacrifice behind it. They do not see the late nights learning parts, the frustration of repetition, the difficult rehearsals, the exhaustion after work, the tension of trying to grow as a team, or the moments where you wondered if you were even making progress at all. They only see the platform. God sees the process.

In the Old Testament, the Levites did not simply appear ready. They prepared themselves before ministering before the Lord. Worship has always carried preparation attached to it. Oil was pressed before lamps could burn. Grain was crushed before bread could feed people. Instruments were tuned before songs could rise. In the same way, rehearsal shapes the heart of a worship leader long before the service ever begins.

Psalm 126 says, “Those who sow in tears shall reap with joyful shouting.” Psalms Sometimes those tears look like discipline. Sometimes they look like repetition. Sometimes they look like showing up when you are tired. Sometimes they look like learning humility inside rehearsal when things are not perfect. But over time, God produces joy from faithful preparation.

The freedom you feel while leading worship is usually connected to the faithfulness you carried in private practice. Confidence is not built by accident. Unity is not built overnight. Strong worship cultures are formed through hundreds of small moments where teams chose preparation over laziness and consistency over excuses.

Rehearsal may feel ordinary in the moment, but it is quietly producing something spiritual inside of you. It teaches patience. It teaches listening. It teaches humility. It teaches teamwork. It teaches endurance. And eventually the tears of preparation become the joy of ministry.

Because the beauty of worship is rarely born in the spotlight. Most of it was formed in the hidden places long before the first chord was ever played.

Worship leaders who consistently prepare beforehand are usually the ones who are the most free to actually minister in the moment because they already handled the hard work before Sunday arrived.

Branon Dempsey
<div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" You sit down with your instrument, listen to the songs, and work through the parts until your hands know what to do. It can feel routine, repetitive, and mechanical. But practice is far more spiritual than many musicians realize. Practice is stewardship. Practice is preparation. Practice is worship.

What you do in private becomes the foundation for what happens in public. The confidence you feel on Sunday morning is not created when you step onto the platform. It is built in the quiet moments at home when no one is watching. Each time you repeat a difficult passage, internalize a song form, and prepare your heart, you are offering your time and attention back to God.

The apostle Paul writes in Colossians 3:23, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” This includes your preparation. Learning music with diligence is one way you serve Christ with excellence.

Subscribe now
